Best way to break up large pdf files?

Greetings all! I have a question that Im hoping someone can help me with. I have two knitting books Id like to share that I havent found on this site, however both are over the size limit. (One is 115MB and the other is 25MB.) I have a Mac and the only thing Ive found online is to export the pdf in preview and use the "reduce file size" quartz filter. When I do that, the files are less than 10MB but the text is illegible so the files are worthless. What is the best way to handle this? Or am I doomed to not share these? Thanks in advance! (And sorry if I reply slowly - I dont spend a ton of time on my computer).

I use the print to PDF and then tell it to print only pages 1-20, then I do it again and tell it to do 21-40 and so forth till I am done. Sometimes you have to test out how many pages are under the 10MB size, then calculate how many new PDFs you will need to create.

I believe these are the steps to use on a MAC that is using OS X. I gathered the info from the internet since I am a Windows user.
First, open the PDF. Once your document is open, open the File menu at the top of the page and click Print.
The print options page will open.
Select pages to print (example 1-20)
Click on the button in the bottom left corner labeled PDF.
Select Save as PDF, choose a destination for your new document, and click Save. You’ve just converted your original document into a new smaller PDF file.

Thanks for the suggestion! I did actually try that but couldnt get the file sizes down small enough (but the text was legible still so that was nice!) It would be nice if there was one that let you specify a size though.

I reduce the file size with Optimize pdf and if its still over the limit I zip the files using 7-zip (creates .rar files too and its a free program).  Sadly, even if you were to post the item for "free" each part will cost 30 Gold Coins to download so if you wind up with 5 parts it would cost 150 Gold Coins just for the downloads.  I try my best to get it into one file.  My guess is your files were hand scanned by someone which creates huge files, or possibly it was an "ebook" that was converted to a .pdf.  Sometimes multiple files are unavoidable :-(

You are correct - its a hand scanned book. Well, one of them is. Another is a Knit Picks ebook but its huge. No idea why they did that. Im definitely going to have to shrink that one down a lot bef  Details Reply Post time 2017-11-21 07:14

I will have to check out Optimize pdf and 7-zip. Does 7-zip create the files that are multiple zip files but when you extract the first one, all of them extract to give you just one file? Because something like that would probably be most convenient for downloading.

Interesting you mention Knit Picks because just this evening I was trying to reduce a 15 mg file of theirs to under 10 mg so I dont have to split the file. I wasnt successful :-( It usually works  Details Reply Post time 2017-11-21 15:16

Be careful and check your file before uploading after using a program to shrink the files. In some of my experiences it makes the text and images very blurry. In some cases (especially cross stitch charts) it makes them unusable.

Yes, thats the biggest issue I was running up against trying to get the quartz filter in the print section to resize the file. I mean, it made the file 4Mb, but everything was illegible. Bah, details  Details Reply Post time 2017-11-21 14:57
