Good luck! I had five discs fused about ten years ago. Anticipating the surgery was far worse than the real thing! Hopefully your surgery goes well. Just remember to keep walking as soon as they let you out of bed. Its a huge help!
Beg or borrow a treadmill. I live in northern Minnesota so I know all about cold weather.
