I have asked for advice, checked up charts, try to follow the pattern and still somehow end up buying the wrong yarn. I wish I could just pay someone to help with that side of things, I hate looking for/ordering yarn lol

Some yarns say ‘baby’ on them, so they are marketed to be soft enough for kids. 4 ply is a good weight for kids, but the type of yarn matters as well. Some fibres is sometimes too rough to be worn against the skin. It’s sometimes a preference thing. Some parents only want natural fibres while others prefer 100% acrylic that is easy to wash. Sometimes wool depending on how soft and fine the fibres are (micron) can feel scratchy. That’s how I understand it.
