I also am in the camp of using what a pattern says - if they suggest a certain weight and you are using the correct weight - perhaps your friends are also being picky (I hate to say that, but). Good luck

My favorite type of yarn is a soft, worsted weight merino wool because it strikes the perfect balance between comfort, versatility, and stitch definition.
