I always go down a size in needles so that the work is tight and keeps its shape. I’ve always done that

Besides Youtube for help (its a great resource), see if you can find a local knit group to join.  My local library has a "Knit Night" once a week at every branch free to drop in.  See if your library has something similar, or if not, is willing to start one.  Knitters are very social and supportive people Ive found out and having a group to help or give second opinions on colour or gauge, or just to talk to is great.

Learn to "read" your stitches - to identify a purl vs a knit stitch. Count your stitches and count your rows. Use stitch markers - they are so helpful! Dont start out using dark yarn because youll have a hard time seeing what youre doing. Start projects youre passionate about so youll have the motivation to finish.

Don’t take it too seriously, this is just yarn so nothing to be afraid of ! Mistakes are part of the learning process and unraveling a few rows - or even more ! - happens to everybody and it”s totally normal, whatever you level. Take time to read your pattern before beginning. That said, don’t be afraid if some instructions dont really make sense at first, they will get clearer when you reach them while knitting. Dont underestimate the power of gauge to have success, whatever you do, you’ll be knitting one, you’ll be just deciding if it measures a few inches square or an entire sweater... I hope you’ll have a good time knitting, it is such a relaxing and enjoyable hobby !
